What is a Learning and Performance Ecosystem?
Learning and performance improvement thought-leaders Marc Rosenberg and Steve Foreman have coined the term “learning and performance ecosystem” to reflect a model of supporting people at work, on demand, at the time of need, while managing the flood of new information that rushes at us daily.
Rosenberg and Foreman describe this ecosystem as “enhancing individual and organizational effectiveness by connecting people and supporting them with a broad range of content, processes, and technologies to drive performance.” It brings together six major components, each with its own organizational goal:
- Performance support – to improve productivity and reduce errors
- Talent management – to manage and develop the workforce
- Access to experts – to leverage expertise in the organization
- Social networking and collaboration – to encourage exchange of knowledge and ideas
- Structured learning – to train, certify, and meet compliance requirements
- Knowledge management – to provide easy and reliable access to information
A learning and performance ecosystem is not rigid. It should continually evolve, incorporating new ideas, processes, and technologies while eliminating outdated ones.
Now, play the game to see if you can become a learning and performance ecosystem “master.” Good luck!
